Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant advantages: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. However, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
