Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy redactions portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials defended the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt significant questions about what may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded increased transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Figures Rally In Support of the Release
But, some conservative pundits and former President allies came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But some are not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing these files for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that came before the legislative vote to enact a bill requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of materials that included no new data.
