Approximately 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Law enforcement say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Police then discovered many other smeared cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests show the substance was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; authorities are presently not informed of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the community for information.
An important political figure commented the attack left him without words and required to be resolved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant aiming at residents of migrant background in February 2020.
